Born into a poor family that lived in a small rented home with frequent and long power cuts, he defied adversity, showcasing unwavering determination to achieve his goal of becoming an IAS officer. The civil services examination, conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commision) is a prestigious examination that only the creme-de-la-creme manage to clear with sheer dedication and hard work. Govind Jaiswal is a prime example of a candidate who excelled in the exam, securing the 48th rank and earning the prestigious title of an IAS officer. Mr. Govind Jaiswal’s father, Narayan, owned 35 rickshaws at one point, but he had to sell 20 of them to pay for his wife’s treatment, who unfortunately passed away in 1995. Later, Narayan sold the remaining rickshaws to support his son’s education and became a rickshaw puller himself. While Narayan pulled rickshaws with a wounded leg and declining health in Varanasi, Govind Jaiswal studied for long hours, burning the midnight oil, and supported himself by giving tuitions. There were also days when he skipped meals to save money.
Studying tirelessly and without taking a a break, Govind Jaiswal, cleared the UPSC exam in the first attempt itself, at the age of 22, grabbing an All India Rank of 48, in the year 2006.
Interestingly, while a majority of candidates write the UPSC exams in english, Govind Jaiswal cleared the exam in Hindi, with Philosophy and History as his main subjects. This in itself sets him as a rolemodel for students who are studying in hindi medium or other regional languages to write this prestitious exam in a language they are comfortable and well versed in. He completed his schooling and college in government institutions and did not seek coaching to clear his exams. While in Varanasi, his big family lived in a one-bedroom rented house in an area where there were long power cuts. Despite these hurdles, Govind Jaiswal’s spirits remained undaunted as he always dreamt big.
