Tragedy struck the Wayanad district of Kerala in the early hours of July 30, 2024, when a massive Wayanad landslide wiped out washed away houses and the people living in them. The latest reports indicate that at least 119 people have reportedly died, hundreds injured, and several others feared missing.
The disaster took place in Wayanad district of Kerala with villages Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha directly under the impact of the landslide. Rescue and recovery operations are in full swing in these areas with the state’s machinery working on a war footing to provide relief to those affected. The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), Army, Air Force, Fire Force, and state police force working jointly to save and rescue people.

Wayanad is a tourist destination in the southern state of India, Kerala and lies in the western ghat mountains. This particular region is prone to landslides, especially during heavy rainfalls, from June to October.
Reports suggest that over the past few days, Wayanad had received a record-breaking 500 mm of rainfall over the last 36 hours.
